| Tsar of Russia (1613–45), the great-nephew of Ivan IV. He was the founder of the Romanov dynasty that ruled Russia until the revolution of 1917. Elected by the boyars after a successful revolt against the Poles, he brought an end to the Time of Troubles that had plagued Russia since the death of Boris Godunov in 1605. He concluded peace with Sweden (1617) and Poland (1618). He left the business of government largely in the hands of his father, the patriarch Filaret (Philaret) (Fedor Nikitch Romanov, c.1554/5–1633), who reorganized the army and industry with the help of experts from abroad, and consolidated the system of serfdom. |
