| Film director, born in Berlin, Germany. After spending the war years in Britain, he arrived in the USA in 1945, and directed his first short subject, A Touch of the Times (1947–9) while still in college. He worked on a number of educational short films and documentaries with Louis De Rochemont before making his first fiction feature, Nothing but a Man (1964), highly acclaimed for its sensitive depiction of African-American life. |
