| Swimmer, born in Frankfurt, WC Germany. An outstanding butterfly and freestyle swimmmer, he uses his great height (6 ft 7 in/201 cm) and long arm span to advantage. In 1981–7 he won a record 13 gold medals at the European Championships. He was the world 200 m freestyle and 200 m butterfly champion in 1982 and 1986, and has won three Olympic gold medals: the 100 m butterfly and 200 m freestyle in 1984, and the 200 m butterfly in 1988. |
