| biography:
| Singer and songwriter, born in Finchley, NW Greater London, UK. A partner with Andrew Ridgeley (1963– ) of the band Wham!, he released his debut solo single ‘Careless Whisper’ in 1985, which reached number 1 in the UK charts, while Wham!'s popularity continued to rise. In 1985 he became the youngest ever recipient of the Ivor Novello Songwriter of the Year award (he won it again in 1989). His second solo single ‘A Different Corner’ (1986) topped the UK charts before the final Wham! concert. His debut solo album, Faith, topped the UK and US charts, staying in the US charts for over a year. A tangle with the law at a public convenience in the USA did not affect the success of Ladies and Gentlemen (1998), and in December 1999 he released Songs From the Last Century. |
