| Stage director, born in Belfast, NE Northern Ireland, UK. He studied at Edinburgh University, before commencing his training at the Malaya Bronnaya Theatre, Moscow. He began his career at the Belgrade Theatre, Coventry (1980–2), became an associate director at the Crucible, Sheffield (1982–4), and was founding artistic director of the Tron Theatre, Glasgow (1985–9). He became an associate director of the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) in 1996, and won an Olivier Award for best director for the Henry VI trilogy (2000). In 2003 he succeeded Adrian Noble as artistic director of the RSC. |
