| biography:
| Linguist, born in Leeds, West Yorkshire, N England, UK. He studied at London and Cambridge universities, taught Chinese at Cambridge (1954–8) and linguistics at Edinburgh (1958–63), and held professorial posts at universities in Britain and the USA before becoming professor of linguistics at Sydney (1976–87). He is known for his work in theoretical linguistics which led to the development of scale-and-category grammar in the 1960s, and then systemic grammar. |
