| Lawyer, politician, and public official, born in Suwalki, Poland. He emigrated to New York City (1891), and through working by day and studying at night he earned admission to the bar (1898). A specialist in labour law, he became active in leftist politics and helped found the Socialist Party of America. Elected to the US House of Representatives as a Socialist (New York, 1915–19, 1921–3), he fought for labour reform and other progressive causes, and initially opposed US participation in World War 1. He was killed in an automobile accident. |
