| British engineer. He lost his sight at six, but became an outstanding athlete and horseman. During the 1745 Jacobite rising he fought at Falkirk and Culloden (1746), set up a stagecoach between York and Knaresborough, and from 1765 constructed 185 mi of road, and numerous bridges, in Lancashire and Yorkshire. |
