| Political scientist, born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. A Harvard PhD, he spent his academic career at the University of Wisconsin, and as Rupert Emerson Professor of Political Science after 1969. He specialized in the development and politics of developing countries, particularly Africa. His works include The Politics of Cultural Pluralism (1976), Ideology and Development in Africa (1982), and The Rise and Decline of the Zairian State (co-authored, 1985). |
