| biography:
| Explorer, born in Charlotteville, Virginia, USA. He grew up in the wilderness, served in the army, and in 1801 became personal secretary to President Thomas Jefferson. He was invited with his long-time friend William Clark to lead an expedition (1804–6) to explore the lands to the W of the Mississippi, and to keep a detailed journal of his experiences. It was the first overland journey by Americans to the Pacific Coast, and one of the longest transcontinental journeys ever undertaken. He became Governor of Louisiana in 1808, and died in a shooting incident on his way to Washington. |
