| Anabaptist leader, born in Witmarsum, The Netherlands. Ordained a Roman Catholic priest in 1524, he withdrew from the Church under the influence of Lutheran thought in 1536. He was made an elder at Groningen in 1537, and organized Anabaptist groups in N Europe that were persecuted by Catholics and Protestants alike. The evangelical Mennonite sect was named after him. |
