| Poet, born in Angoulême, W France, the nephew or son of Octavien de Saint-Gelais. After a trip to Italy, he was appointed almoner to the Dauphin, by François I, then librarian at Fontainebleau. He tried to surpass Ronsard, with whom he was later reconciled. His poetic works, Sophonisbe published in 1574 , were half-way between eroticism and devotion. |
