| biography:
| Greek philosopher and statesman. He commanded the Samian fleet which defeated the Athenians under Pericles in 441 BC. He was probably a pupil of Parmenides of Elea, and wrote a book entitled On Nature, which elaborated Parmenides' views on the properties of reality. It had most influence on the atomists, Democritus, and Leucippus, in their response to Eleatic doctrines. |
