| biography:
| Cultural anthropologist, born in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. He studied at the University of Minnesota (1941 BA) and Northwestern (1950 PhD), and taught at Washington University (St Louis), the University of Connecticut, and Chicago before becoming chairman of the anthropology department at the University of California, San Diego (1968). His publications include Kibbutz: Venture in Utopia (1955) and Kinship and Marriage in Burma (1977). |
