| Poet and editor, born in Treforest, Rhondda Cynon Taff, S Wales, UK. He studied at Aberystwyth and Rennes universities. He founded Poetry Wales in 1965, compiled The Oxford Companion to the Literature of Wales in both Welsh and English, and is the editor of many anthologies and reference books, especially relating to Wales, such as A Most Peculiar People (1992) and Literature in 20th Century Wales: A Select Bibliography (1995). Other works include A Dictionary of Literary Quotations (1990), and the second edition of The Oxford Illustrated Literary Guide to Great Britain and Ireland (1992). In 1999 he was editor of A White Afternoon: New Welsh Short Fiction. He became literature director of the Welsh Arts Council in 1967. |
