| biography:
| Writer, born in Lower Saxony, Germany. Her vivid, rapturous verse and prose are among the most important works of German mysticism. She spent a cloistered youth under the care of the Dominican Heinrich von Halle, who collected her writings (c.1290) under the title Das fließende Licht der Gottheit. In these she describes her visions, but also speaks critically about the Church and society. Written in Low German, her works are today available only in Latin and Middle High German translations (the latter by Heinrich von Nördlingen, 1345). |
