| biography:
| Rugby union player, born in Toomebridge, Co Antrim, NE Northern Ireland, UK. He played his entire club career with Ballymena. Tall and massively built, he won 63 caps as a lock for Ireland, plus 17 British Lions caps from five tours - both records. After retiring in 1975, he was Irish national coach, manager of the 1983 British Lions team in New Zealand, and a vocal campaigner for contact with South Africa. |
