| Novelist, born in New York City, USA. He was educated in New York, served in the US Navy, and became a teacher before concentrating on his career as a novelist. He is renowned for his ‘87th Precinct’ thrillers, written under his pseudonym, such as The Last Dance (2000). Under his own name, his works generally deal with social problems. He is best known for The Blackboard Jungle (1954), acclaimed for its realism and topicality. Later books include Sons (1969), Walk Proud (1978), Lizzie (1984), Privileged Conversation (1996), and Nocturne (1997). |
