| biography:
| Publisher and politician, born in Slatinske Dòly, Czech Republic. Self-educated, he served in World War 2 before founding the Pergamon Press. A former Labour MP (1964–70), he had many business interests, including film production and television. He became chairman of the Mirror group of newspapers in 1984, but was forced to float the company on the London stock market in 1991. Following his death in mysterious circumstances (his body was found in the sea near the Canary Is, after he disappeared from his luxury yacht), it transpired that he had secretly siphoned large sums of money from two of his companies, and from employee pension funds, to preserve his financial empire. |
