| Painter, born in Brühl, near Cologne, W Germany. After studying philosophy at Bonn, he turned to painting. In 1919 he founded at Cologne the German Dada group, and later became part of the Surrealist movement in Paris. He settled in the USA in 1941, but returned to France in 1953. His use of the subconscious as inspiration can be seen in ‘Oedipus Rex’ (1921) and ‘Polish Rider’ (1954). |
