| Elector of the Holy Roman Empire (from 1679), born in Munich, SE Germany. Grandson of Maximilian I of Bavaria and son-in-law of Emperor Leopold I whom he supported in the second Turkish War (1683–99), his reputation was made by the capture of Belgrade. Statthalter of the Spanish Netherlands (1696–9), he participated in the War of the Spanish Succession on the French side against Leopold I and was banished from Bavaria after defeat at Höchstädt (1704). In the peace agreements of Rastatt and Baden (1714) he regained Bavaria. |
