biography: Mathematician, born in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. A Harvard University professor (1904–18), he was a National Academy of Science member, and his work centred on differential equations. He served on the editorial staff of Annals of Mathematics (1896–1900, 1901–7), and as president of the American Mathematical Society (1909–10) he also edited the society's Transactions (1908–9, 1911–13).
