| Writer, born in Scheibenberg, near Annaberg, Germany. Initially a teacher, he studied at the Literaturinstitut Johannes R Becher (1957–9), eventually becoming its director in 1964. He is chiefly known for his novel Wir sind nicht Staub im Wind. Roman einer unverlorenen Generation (1962), which is largely autobiographical and focuses on the central character's experiences during and after World War 2. It is a significant example of social realistic literature in East Germany. He also wrote literary criticism. |
