| Theatre director, born in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, EC England, UK. He began his career as associate director of the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh, in 1966, becoming artistic director there (1968–70). He then became director of the Traverse Theatre Workshop Company (1970–4), when he co-founded the Joint Stock Theatre Company, becoming artistic director in 1993. He was also artistic director of the English Stage Company at the Royal Court Theatre, London (1979–93). Later productions include, The Steward of Christendom (1995), Shopping and F**king (1996), and Blue Heart (1997). |
