| biography:
| Theatre director, born in Baden, NC Germany. An introverted child, he was sent to drama school, and was a shy actor before turning to directing at the Kleines Theatre in Berlin (1902). He became famous overnight with his 1905 production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. An innovator in theatre art and technique, his work often involved spectacular, large-scale productions, as in The Miracle (London, 1911), which used over 2000 actors. As co-founder of the Salzburg Festival (1920), he left Germany in 1933, and moved to Hollywood, where he opened a theatre workshop. |
