| biography:
| Writer, born in Güttland, near Danzig, Germany. A friend of Wedekind, Hartleben, Keyserling, and Thoma, he was a member of the artistic milieu in Schwabing. His most successful work was the play Jugend, a lyrical evocation of first love with a tragic outcome. The realistic Mutter Erde (1897) and Der Strom (1904) stress the inevitability of fate and use natural disaster as a symbol for social catastrophe. |
