| Physicist, born in Wrocław, SW Poland (formerly Breslau, Prussia). He became professor of theoretical physics at Göttingen (1921–33), lecturer at Cambridge (1933–6), and professor of natural philosophy at Edinburgh (1936–53). In 1954 he shared the Nobel Prize for Physics with Walther Bothe for work in the field of quantum physics. |
