| Italian politician, born in Chiavenna, Lombardy, N Italy. He went into exile after taking part in the failed 1821 revolutionary risings. He later fought for the freedom of Poland in the unsuccessful Polish risings of 1830–1. A volunteer in Valtellina during the 1st Italian Independence War, he took part in the temporary Tuscan government and in the defence of Rome (1849). After its fall, he went into exile. |
