| Artist, born in Paris, France. He was largely self-taught, worked with Derain, and came to be influenced by van Gogh. By 1905 he was one of the leaders of the Fauves, using typically brilliant colour, then painted more Realist landscapes under the influence of Cézanne (1908–14), and later developed a more sombre Expressionism. |
