| biography:
| French soldier, born in Carcassonne, S France. In World War 1 he led the 3rd Army at the Battle of the Marne (1914), and from 1915 to 1917 commanded the Allied forces in the East (Salonica), where he deposed Constantine I of Greece. He was high commissioner in Syria (1924–5), but was recalled after the bombardment of Damascus during a rising. |
