| Actress, born in New York City, USA. A major interpreter of the plays of Tennessee Williams, her role as Serafina in The Rose Tattoo (1951) brought her great acclaim. She followed with Flora in Twenty-Seven Wagons Full of Cotton (1955), Lady Torrance in Orpheus Descending (1957), and the turbulent Amanda Wingfield in a revival of The Glass Menagerie in 1965. Acclaimed as one of the great US stage actresses, she has also appeared in a number of films. |
