| Theatre director, born in Stockwell, London, UK. She trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, London, and with Ewan MacColl founded in Manchester the Theatre of Action (1934) and the Theatre Union (1936). Out of this pioneering work in left-wing, popular theatre was formed the Theatre Workshop in 1945. She directed the first British production for Brecht's Mother Courage in Barnstaple in 1955, in which she played the title role, and after settling at the Theatre Royal, Stratford East, her productions included The Hostage (1958) and Oh! What a Lovely War (1963). She received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Directors' Guild in 1995. |
