| Locomotive engineer and industrialist, born in Elizabeth, New Jersey, USA. A jeweller up to the age of 30, he began to make hydraulic presses and printing machinery, and by 1827 was manufacturing steam engines. His first locomotive, Old Ironsides, was completed in 1832 and remained in service for 20 years. The Baldwin Locomotive Works built over 1000 engines by 1861, and remained for many years the world's largest manufacturer. |
