| Brewer, businessman, and philanthropist, born in East Tuddenham, Norfolk, E England, UK. In 1796 his family brought him to Dutchess County, NY, where an uncle began a brewery. Matthew began his own in 1811, and over the next years expanded his business interests to include investing in land and a whaling fleet. Seeking a ‘charitable purpose’ for his fortune, he was persuaded to start a college for women in Poughkeepsie, NY, which commenced in 1861. He lacked formal schooling, but held advanced ideas about women's abilities. |
