| Founder of the Jesuit missions in China, born in Macerata, W Italy. He studied at Rome, then travelled to India, where he was ordained (1580). He went on to China in 1583, and from 1602 was employed at the court in Beijing. He mastered Chinese, wrote works to a standard which received much commendation from the Chinese literati, and met with great success as a missionary. His journal (over 600 pages in English translation) gives close detail on Ming China. |
