| biography:
| Ruler of Tuscany, and part of Lombardy and upper Lotharingia. The daughter of Boniface of Tuscany and Beatrix of Lorena, on the death of her brothers she inherited a number of territories. She supported the pope in the investiture contest with Henry IV, and gave hospitality to Gregory VII at her Canossa castle, where Henry IV went to make a public apology (1077). She left all her domains to the church, an act which gave rise to more controversy between pope and emperor. |
