| biography:
| Poet, born in Chartres, NC France, the nephew of the poet Philippe Desportes (d.1605). He became secretary to Cardinal François de Joyeuse, and accompanied him to Rome in 1583. His dissolute ways forced his return to France, where he accepted the protection of his uncle, and in 1609 became canon of Chartres. Best among his satirical poetry is Macette (1609). An acute critic, in Satire à Rapin he castigated François Malherbe in an attack on the theory that poetry must conform to precise classical and intellectual standards. His vigorous portraits would inspire Boileau. |
