| German aviator. He achieved worldwide fame in May 1987 when he landed his light aircraft in Red Square in the heart of Moscow, having been undetected on a flight from Finland. His exploit led to the immediate dismissal of the Soviet defence minister, Marshal Sergei Sokolov. Rust was sentenced to four years' imprisonment, but was released in August 1988 and flown home as a goodwill humanitarian gesture by the Gorbachev administration. |
