| Publisher and bookseller, born in Dublin, Ireland. Fleeing to the USA in 1784 to escape prosecution for anti-British publications, he settled in Philadelphia, where he became an important publisher and wrote widely on economics and other subjects. In 1785 he founded the Pennsylvania Herald, noted for its detailed coverage of the legislature. He also founded the Hibernian Society and the nation's first Sunday school. |
