| Queen Anne's confidante, the cousin of Sarah Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough, through whose influence she entered the royal household. In 1707 she married Samuel (later Baron) Masham. A subtle intriguer and strongly Tory, she gradually turned the queen against the Marlboroughs, and in 1710 superseded her cousin as the queen's confidante and the power behind the throne. |
