| Royal princess, the daughter of Henry VII. She was betrothed to Archduke Charles of Austria in 1507, but when her brother, Henry VIII, succeeded to the throne he renounced the match, and arranged her marriage with Louis XII of France (1514). Following Louis' death (1515), Mary secretly married Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk, with whom she had been in love for several years. One of their daughters became the mother of Lady Jane Grey, who was titular queen of England for nine days (1553). |
