| Presbyterian missionary, born in Aberdeen, NE Scotland, UK. She worked as a mill girl in Dundee from childhood but, conceiving a burning ambition to become a missionary, was accepted by the United Presbyterian Church for teaching in Calabar, Nigeria (1876). There she spent many years of devoted work among the natives, who called her ‘Great Mother’. |
