| Soprano, born in Aberdeen, NE Scotland, UK. Taken to America as a child, she studied singing in Chicago, then in Paris. Her career began sensationally when she took over in mid-performance the title role in Charpentier's new opera Louise at the Opéra-Comique in 1900, when the singer was taken ill. Debussy chose her for Mélisande in Pelléas et Mélisande (1902), and Massenet and Erlanger also wrote leading roles for her. She sang at Covent Garden (1902–3), her US debut was in 1907, and in 1910 she began a 20-year association with Chicago Grand Opera, which she also briefly directed (1921–2). She returned to Scotland in 1939. |
