| Dominican politician and prime minister (1980–95), born in Pointe Michel, Dominica. After qualifying as a barrister in London, she returned to the West Indies to practise. She entered politics in 1968, two years later became co-founder and first leader of the centrist Dominica Freedom Party (DFP), and became an MP in 1975. Two years after independence, the DFP won the 1980 general election and she became the Caribbean's first female prime minister. She was re-elected in 1985 and 1990. |
