| Writer, born in Poznan, WC Poland (formerly Posen, Prussia). He worked in a factory from the age of 13, educated himself, and became a writer whose works reflected his own experiences and the social problems of industrial Berlin. His books include Die Betrogenen (1882, The Deceived), Die Verkommenen (1883, The Depraved), and Meister Timpe (1888, Master Timpe). He has sometimes been called ‘the German Zola’, on account of his realism. |
