| Film director, writer, and producer, born in Flushing, Long Island, New York, USA. He studied film at New York University, then made commercials and worked as a film editor before returning to direction with Boxcar Bertha (1972). Considered one of the foremost directors of his generation, his work has sought to illuminate masculine aggression and sexual inequality, and he has frequently questioned traditional American values. His many films include Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1974), Taxi Driver (1976), Raging Bull (1980), the controversial The Last Temptation of Christ (1988), GoodFellas (1990, BAFTA best film and director), The Age of Innocence (1993), Kundun (1997), Bringing Out the Dead (1999), and Gangs of New York (2002, Golden Globe, best director; Oscar nomination). |
