| biography:
| Astronomer, born in Potsdam, Germany. He went to Harvard College Observatory as a research fellow in 1937. He served in the US Army in World War 2 and won the Legion of Merit and a Bronze Star. At Princeton University (from 1947), he combined advances in nuclear physics with ‘balloon astronomy’ to develop theories on stellar evolution. |
