| biography:
| Painter and engraver, born in Colmar, E France. He may have studied at the University of Leipzig. Many religious paintings attributed to him have not been authenticated, but well over 100 of his engraved plates have survived, including ‘The Passion of Christ’ and ‘The Wise and Foolish Virgins’. His famous ‘Madonna of the Rose Garden’ altarpiece (1473, Colmar, S Martin) is regarded as one of the best early representations of the Virgin, and shows Flemish influence. |
