| Sinn Féin politician, born in Londonderry, Northern Ireland. A militant supporter of the IRA, who served two jail sentences in the Irish Republic, he developed a major role as a political strategist during the Northern Ireland peace process in the 1990s. He became an MP, though not attending at Westminster, and Sinn Féin's senior minister in the Stormont Assembly. He became minister of education in the devolved Assembly in November 1999. |
