| biography:
| Religious historian and scholar, born in West Point, Nebraska, USA. He had an extensive theological training before taking a doctorate at Chicago. Ordained in the Lutheran Church in 1952, he ministered in Illinois, and was appointed professor of the history of modern Christianity at Chicago in 1963. Among his many books are A Short History of Christianity (1959) and Protestantism in the United States (1985). |
